 Ivory Umbrella handles are Often Turned Into Canes (8823)
It's upsetting to me that so many want only canes, as opposed to umbrellas that were used as canes. Because canes sell for more than umbrellas, many are taking handles off umbrellas and are making them into canes. My goal is to convince you that if umbrellas are the same length, have a ferrule, same handle, that it is in fact a cane. I began to think about why umbrellas bring less than canes. First is that the covers on antique umbrellas are usually rattie. I estimate that for every good original cover that there are 500 torn, rotten, or ripped ones. My opinion is, who wants a beautiful handle on rattie cover thats not a cane. It cost about a $100 to $150 for a new cover, about the same price a a new shaft. I'd rather have a complicatiated original mechanism than a reproduction shaft. I recently bought a collection of presentation umbrellas and canes, and had to pay the same price for the umbrellas as the canes. I was surprised to see that the umbrellas sold faster than the canes. Oh did I tell you the umbrellas had all been redone by Uncle Sams Umbrellas in N.Y. a number of years ago. They were all sold to women who liked them better than canes, because they were more practical, the umbrellas were usable. What's been interesting to me are the numbers of women who want to put some canes or umbrellas with beautiful handles in umbrella holders by the front door. Here is the bottom line, look at the pictures below, these are all umbrellas with good cloth. Some are original and some have been replaced, and all look like umbrellas. Look at those long slender ornate handles, they all speak original. Original and quality have always been the best investment. As people become more educated, from sites like this, unoriginal won't sell. That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.
