A Display Of Presentations (9146)
In this umbrella/cane holder is a display of the wide range of presentation canes that will be displayed in the book. I have chosen to use this picture to illustrate the introduction to this book. The presentation canes pictured here are all uniquely American. The cameos and enamel pieces typically on top arn't, but the engraving and chasing are different than gold style handles similar but different to these made in Europe. We Americans should be prowd of the talents and workmanship these canes illustrate. What degrades them, in my opinion, is the quanity and prices that these are available in, on the American antique market. Why are so many available, because there arn't enough collectors who give them the value they deserve. Collectors don't realize what the cost would be to remake them today, or have been exposed to all the unique styles that exist, which is the goal of this book.
Presentations were made from 1850 to 1930 and its the early ones that are most likely to be gold. Ninty nine and nine tenths % of all Presentations are gold filled, a sheet of gold over another metal like brass or copper. If you find one marked 14K, its most likely not gold, as they were almost never marked or signed.
