Antique Scrimshaw in elephant Ivory (8874)

Scrimshaw has always been a high demand collectable. I wanted one since I started collecting canes. I bought this one at auction and was really excited I got it for only $550, as I thought it would bring several times that. As I ask the experts I soon found out the auction description left out one important detail, it was elephant ivory. Where would the whalers have gotten elephant tusk in the middle of the ocean. So the first thing I found, whalers crafts have to have materials that are available to whalers. Is it a fake I ask? No it most likely came from a place like Sag Harbor, where whalers retired. As far back as the middle 1800’s they carved things like this to bring in a little money. When you look at the subject matter, it doesn’t get any better. Whalers chasing a whale many times their size, the spout blowing, the harpoon ready to attach the boat for a dangerous ride. What excitement, what a disappointment. The good news is I haven’t seen one since, so it is not a common cane, but it is also not wanted by the experts. . As I haven’t sold it, I really don’t know what it is worth, but probably not much more than what I paid 20 years ago.
