Carriage Cane With My Most Valuable Shaft (8844)

When I started reading about early canes, I read a statement that said, the earlier the cane the longer it was. Michael German once said to me, “You can tell a real collector if they have these canes.” They aren’t pretty, or ornate or the length of a normal cane. Actually they look like a staff, even though they aren’t used as a staff. The way to tell the difference between the 18th and the 19th century ones is the shape of the handle and the length of the ferrule. This is the only example you will see of a 19th century, and it’s only here as an educational example, as this book is for 18th century canes. The ferrule at 2.5”, in my opinion, puts it at circa 1820.
Most were very expensive in their day, not because of their handle, but because of their full bark Malacca shaft. I think at 45” this is the rarest shaft I have. It’s certainly the longest one I have between knots. The entire cane is 54”, ferrule 2.5”, handle 6”. Does any one have a longer one?
The value of these is usually $1000 to $2000, but I really don’t know the specifics of pricing these, because they weren’t made in this country and there are not a lot of them to see.
