More Pictures Of Mountain Barometer Cane (9260)

The brass cover turns to cover the vernier scale, mercury tube, and thermomiter. Slot in cover snaps closed when the vernier fills the slot. The handle screws off to expose the gimbeled screw that locks down the mercury for travel. Marratt made scientific instruments at 63 King William Street,in London between 1840 and 1859. This barometer is made in the Newman style. The mechanism of this one looks identical to my other one, but it is not signed. Many instrument makers made a similar mountain barometer that came in a leather case. The books on barometers that show pictures of similar mountian barometers, right down to the turning cover, they just don't taper or have a ferrule. The screw and the mechanism above it is definitely all original and would have been difficult to have been added. Also with the threaded cap removed the back board won't fit the barometer, the length is different. Three screws hold the barometer to the ring extending from the backboard, all specially fitted for quick removal. If you have any more information on this cane, please let me know, as I am no expert on barometers.
