A Display Of Handles Once Belonging To Catherine Dike (8896)

This display in a large wood coffee table with a glass top. opening from the side to take pieces in and out. It is in front of a large comfortable sofa, so as you sit there, its easy to view the works of art inside. I have mixed emotions about this display, mixed not because it's not beautiful, but because they aren't on shafts. I have one display of cheap umbrella handles displayed in this book, coming out of a brass pot with greenery, making them look like a basket of flowers. I knew they shouldn't be on shafts, and I didn't have umbrellas with good cloth to put them on, so that was my alternative, which is no different than displaying handles only. The mixed emotions comes in, because I know these are cane handles that have a lot more value on shafts. Very few people collect handles, the only other ones I have are in their original boxes, which is where I think they should stay, because I think the boxes are rarer than the handle is on a shaft, and that is their original state, they were never on an umbrella or a cane. Do I think his should be on shafts, because they are worth more money on a shaft, because they display better on a shaft, or because they were originally on a shaft and arn't original now. These were not umbrella handles they are cane handles. I took several of the handles out from beneith the glass, just to feel them, then photograph them for the memory. The third picture below, was my favorate, as I had never seen one like it before.
You think you have seen lots of porcelian handles with heads on them. What I think I know is that it is pottery not porcelain, and very early. I don't know who made it, how old it is or how much it is worth. It's not an area I have bought many of. What I do know is that its rare, worth a lot, is a work of art, and I enjoyed looking at it, just the way it was. Mr Dike may someday put a shaft on it and he may not, that will be his decision to make. What I have done today is give you all something to think about, with regard to your handles. I know what I would do if it were mine, but it's not, and different people make different decisions, with their collections.
