Japanese Blue And White Age Unknown (8583)
Japanese pottery in hand painted blue and white. What makes this unusual are the vases that are added to the outside with hand painted flowers coming from them. At 40 pounds this is also the heaviest one I have ever seen, it is almost 1” thick. With a magnifier you can see there are no dots, therefore hand painted. The other interesting point about it is the photo that shows that it was made on a turn table. It was a lot of work to turn a piece this large. Today, the reproduction holders from China are molded, and much lighter than the antique ones. Antique holders are also molded, but they are also much heavier than their new counterparts. I’m not going to be able to tell you the age of this one or the value as I have never seen one like it. My instincts tell me it’s older than 1880, but how much older I don’t know. I need a Japanese expert
