Spitoon (8451)

T.B. was everywhere during the 19th century. Many laws were passed making it illegal to spit, and spittoons were everywhere. Obviously not illegal, but you would think there would be a lot of spittoon canes, there aren’t. They must have been thrown away because of their filth, after T.B. was brought under control. I consider this a very rare cane, and it even has its original funnel inside. If it were laid or fell on its side, the funnel kept it from running out. Nickel plated brass circa 1890. The funnel is removable on this one for washing. It wasn't used much, the original rubber seal around the funnel and the one manufactured into the lid are still in excellent condition.
The shaft is the speckled wood with flask.
Top of handle is signed J. Haran, Paris, Depose.
