Learn to tell German sterling from German silver (8442)

The term German sterling is really incongruous as the definition of sterling is 925 parts out of 1000 pure silver. The are a lot of silver looking items marked German silver which aren’t silver at all, they are nickel. There were lots of different names for nickel items that always had the second word silver. They were all misleading. When an item is marked 800 it is 800 parts out of 1000 pure silver. Although less quality than sterling from a metal point of view, I don’t value it less, as the workmanship is what is important, and the Germans did good work. Circa 1890. A much better quality than what you typically see on a flask cane.
