English gold marking was very accurate, but America’s was not. There was .one very large company that marked their watch cases gold, but they were only gold filled. This one is very flexible, a necessity for it to be solid gold. If a lid is stiff, it’s not going to be gold. The diamonds on the top of this one are European cut, a must for a piece older than 1921, the year round brilliant cut diamonds were invented. That doesn’t mean they were cut in Europe, but a style of cut. Every country in the world that cut diamonds cut them this way. Simply put they have a small flat spot on top called the table, a culet at the bottom tip that is cut flat, instead of a point like today. It doesn’t mean they couldn’t have put old diamonds in, but if it had new style cutting you would know it wasn’t right. Under reproductions and fakes the Faberge copies have old cut diamonds.
This cane is American, with a tape measure in inches, and a vinaigrette. The shaft is olive wood, with a American bimetal ferrule. Circa 1890 to 1910, because of the plane handle with lack of engravings.
