Art Deco Enamel By Gorham? (8241)

This massive cane with a 4” diameter handle and a 2” shaft is signed Gorham, Sterling. The large puff is Goose Down. If you look closely at the pure art deco enameled and copper top, it looks like a hair receiver top. It has a mirror in the center and a mirror facing down when you turn it over. I think even the most suspicious would agree that it looks like a factory original receiver top. Ha. Ha. The top fits perfectly when it is put on and turned. I wondered who would own an odd cane like this, and the only thing that came to mind was a salesman. We certainly are an odd lot. This is about as ostentatious as you can get. A hair receiver was a container with a lid with a hole in the top. After women would brush their hair they would put it in their receiver. It was the hobby of the day to make jewelry out of hair. You also see pictures and watch chains. Its called mourning jewelry, because it was also made from the hair of deceased loved ones. I have two canes with containers of hair, and one with it woven under a locket lid.
