How To Tell How Old A Doulton Of Burslem Is (8581)

This Doulton umbrella holder was made in Burslem England and the patern is Purth. Royal Doulton became the new name for this company in 1902. We know it was made after 1891 because of the McKinnley act of 1891 that all items coming into America had to be marked with its country of origin, and before 1902. I think this is one of the best umbrella holders made. Not the best in terms of value today as there are many that sell for more money. Some of the Victorian figural majolica ones sell for a lot of money, but they aren’t in my opinion any more beautiful. I just bought this one in Brimfield Mass. In Sept of 2006, and I value it around $3000. I had it shipped to me as I was flying, for about $100. I had another quote for $250, which I knew was high, because I have had about 30 of them sent to me now. I have never had one break from a professional shipping company, but I always have them insured just in case. I have had a number of other antiques break when they are sent by individuals, as they often break United Parcel Post rules. They must be double boxed with 2” of packing between the boxes and around the piece. When an item breaks and those rules are not followed, they don’t pay off. I have had that happen a number of times. Although the person sending it is responsible, it is sometimes difficult to get them to pay. I ship by United States Post Office, and find them the most reliable. My business insurance policy covers loses up to $50,000 with no deductible with USPO, but have a hugh deductible with Fedex and UPS. That tells me a lot about who is the most reliable. I once sent a diamond by UPS to N.Y. city that was valued at $33,000 at wholesale, I had $25000 coverage with my policy, and the employee who sent it forgot to buy the extra insurance. It was checked on the UPS truck in N.Y., but it never officially came off. I had to pay $8000 to the diamond vendor, to make up the difference. To add insult to injury, UPS wouldn’t investigate, because it wasn’t their insurance, they weren’t out anything so they didn’t care. They wouldn’t even fill out a police report in N.Y .reporting the loss. I couldn’t even find a police station that would take a report over the telephone. That driver was never investigated by the police.
Express mail is when you send it overnight, the maximum you can insure a package for is $5000. Registered mail can be insured for up to $50,000, but it takes nearly a week to get there. Those packages are kept in a safe overnight and have to be signed for whenever they are given to another postal official. I like our post office.
