Mountian Barometer Cane (9261)

I think this cane and my other similar one is one of the rarest gadget canes if not the rarest. Both canes came out of the same collection of Barometers, and has never been owned by a cane collector. Although mountian barometers are very rare, these are the only ones seen by the collector that owned them for 30 years. What makes them canes, they taper, regular ones don't. The back board on this one is definitely original and made by the barometer maker. The screw cap at the bottom screws off so the ferrule can be mounted for either recreational use or scientific use. It most likely has a closed iron cistern. It could have a glass one but not as likely because of the portable use. The collector recommended not trying to get in to find out which. The inches of mercury go from 32" to 19" and will measure from below sea level at 32, sea level at 31. It will measure 1000 ft for each inch to about 11,000 feet. Its use was most likely for European mountains. Mt. Everest is 29,000 ft.
