Anna Dickinson With Stanhope (8656)
This is the second one of these I have seen, and it's my favorate stanhope cane. It's my favorate because the tube she is holding in her hand was obviously made for a stanhope. This one has a picture of Jesus inside that says, "Blessed are the little children, let them come unto me. Tradewinds sold the other one I have seen, with a different stanhope inside. She was a famous suffragette during the latter part of the 1800's.
It was cast from a pewter materal that is silver plated. It was not an expensive cane at the time, but an important one today, because a lot of them were thrown away, after ladies got the right to vote. It is also the only cane I know that was specificly made for the holding of a stanhope. I will tell you there are stanhope canes out there that have had standhopes added to a hole in a wood shaft, of recent vintege. I will also tell you that because the image is printed on the outside of the glass that the image can easily become damaged, and disappear. I tried to replace one in a ring once, and got glue on the lense and you couldn't see the picture. I have also seen canes with holes in them, and I knew immediately that it was where a stanhope had fallen out. Glue dries out and they simply fall out. I had that happen to me with a stanhope cane that is no more. I gave a lengthy explantion on standhope canes in Beyond Dike # .
